Illustration responding to word restricted

This piece was originally a biro on paper study, I scanned it in and used the smart trace tool on illustrator. With the smart trace tool I ticked the ignore white button and then painted behind the layer with large messy style brushes. This was a different approach to my usual style of digital illustration

This piece is what I imagined when I was given the word Restricted, I imagined restricted movement, being held and not being able to move. I wanted to approach this from a different point of view so I went for the abstract idea of a giant octopus attacking a submarine. It is a simple look which still brings out the crumpled look of the submarine,  I think it worked effectively. I created this with the live trace tool over a pen drawing, and used live paint and knife tool for colouring.

Macbeth Advertisement Trailer Storyboard

I chose a very abstract and minimalistic style of trailer. The first nine frames are a close up of the surrounding edges of the crown, it only becomes apparent that you are looking at the Kings crown as the animation pans across the whole image and zooms out to reveal the whole composition. I chose the image of the crown as it is a strong representation of the play. I created this with  a paint marker on black paper, I then scanned each slide, converting them into vectors, and resized them to fit into the appropriate frames.

Macbeth Posters

These are 3 Macbeth posters I created for my recent advertising project. The task was to create 2 posters for Shakespeare stories. I chose Macbeth as I  enjoyed this the play and I thought it was the best choice for me. I created these pieces by first making them on paper, then scanning them in and editing them on Adobe Illustrator.

This first Poster was created by first doing a monoprint of a crown on black paper, I scanned it in and opened it up on Photoshop to change the levels and hue to make a more of a brown and green colour instead of white. I then transferred it to Illustrator and converted it to a vector with the live trace tool and flattened the colours out to get the desired effect. I then added the title of the play, this is in the same style and font as my storyboard, I did this to make it have an identifiable relation. 

The second poster I created relates directly to my storyboards last few frames. I mixed them together and used lots of black in the background to make the image stand out. I tried to go for a minimalistic style using symbolism which I feel I achieved here.

I wanted to created a crown using a wild looking style of thin scratchy looking lines. I did this to portray the emotions in the play. I first drew this out on paper then scanned it in and using the live trace tool in Illustrator turned it into a vector, I then recoloured it to white and sized and placed it so the composition looked right, to help me do this I used the rulers and align to artboard tools.

Typography

For my typography project I created a purely typographical piece. I used knives for the letter L to represent the strong emotion of revenge, they are facing downwards to show a strong connotation of stabbing. I created this piece on illustrator with the pen tool and text tool, I think the font I used fits really well with the theme and the composition of the words works perfectly as the knives stack on top of each other.

I was set the task to create a piece of typography for a random phrase that was given to me by my lecturer. The phrase I was given symbolises revenge and getting the upper hand, I have used an image of a man with no face to portray it being about being sneakiness and backstabbing. The man is in a 60’s style and based on Don Draper from Mad Men. I really like the style of the men in the series and I think implementing it with this typography project has worked well and I like the way it looks.

This is a page from my sketchbook showing the design process of creating typography for my poster. I have explained how and why I have made the choices I have made, and weather I like them or not. I regularly  use experimentation like this as I find it useful in my sketchbooks.

This is a sketchbook page which shows the process of making the illustration for my typography project. I first sketched out the idea with general shading, then I scanned the sketch in and to bring out the tones more. Then with the pen tool I went around the edges of the image to create the black outlines. Then I filled in the shapes with base colours, and after that I used the knife tool to slice through these shapes made by the block colours, and I filled these slices in with highlights and shadows in the appropriate places.

Toothpaste Rotation Graphics

This is my response to the poem Toothpaste by Michael Rosen. I tried to capture frustration through biro, masking tape, ink, paint, charcoal and images of a toothpaste tube in the small space of the mangled tube. I used a wide variety of materials because being frustrated is a scattered emotion and I could break the piece up more by doing this.
